The causes of rheumatoid arthritis are unknown and different cases may have different causes.
It has been suggested that genetics, infections or other environmental factors can all play a role in the cause of rheumatoid arthritis. However, there is no single gene or environmental factor which can be considered an independent cause of the disease.
